Military Sound Recording Explained

images

Sound’s always been the poorer cousin of the audio-visual experience in gaming, and it’s not just restricted to our appreciation of the content. I bet a lot of you know at least some of the basics of graphics tech (anti-aliasing, bump-mapping, etc), but how many of you know anything about how sounds are recorded and arranged for games?

No, I had no idea either.

Charles Maynes does, though. Not only is he a sound recorder for games, he specializ s in guns, bombs, mortars, grenades and explosions. So, yeah, he just gets to shoot stuff all day. Best job I’ve come across in a long time.

Gamasutra spoke with Charles about his work, and it’s pretty interesting stuff. Be warned, though, it gets pretty technical towards the end.
